The 2018 Children’s Cancer Diamond Ball was held at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. I decided to volunteer for this black-tie event since it sounded like a fun night.
I was asked meet and great, check people in and advise them where to go for pre-dinner drinks. The room in the Grand Hyatt looked amazing, with diamond like features decorated around the room.
My new friend and I were selling raffle tickets and bottles of Veuve Clicquot Champagne to our allocated tables. One of our tables bought a whole booklet of raffle tickets, we were doing well and it was only the start of the evening.
The night consisted of a silent auction and another auction which was a piece of artwork created and donated by cancer sufferer. A video was played of a girl that did not survive but wanted to leave a message behind. We heard from a mother whose family was torn apart by the ongoing mental health of what happens to a family that has a child who has cancer. A doctor took the stand and told us that each person has a different type of cancer and it is rare that two cancers that are the same.
At the end of the night there was a pledge where each table pledged money out of the kindness of there hearts.
It was time for the raffle ticket draw, and Kitty O’Sullivan the host for the night was to take a raffle ticket out of the barrel, funny enough it was her own ticket. She kindly throws her winning ticket to the side and picks out another ticket. Total money raised for the night was an outstanding $396,570.00!
I met some lovely fellow volunteers and at the end of the night when our duties were finished a few of the ticket holders asked us to come a join them on the dance floor for a boogie. A great way to end a great night.
